How to Build Your Own AI Agent Using ChatGPT & Make.com (Without Losing Your Sanity)

So, you’ve decided to build an AI agent. Maybe you want it to automate tedious tasks, impress your boss, or just have something to blame when things go wrong. Whatever the reason, you’re in the right place!

Today, we’re going to create a simple AI-powered agent using ChatGPT and Make.com (formerly Integromat). And don’t worry—I’ll keep it simple, funny, and hopefully disaster-free.

If at any point you feel like throwing your laptop out the window, William Peers Digital AI & Automation Services is here to save the day. Seriously, we help businesses streamline automation without the tech-induced headaches.

Let’s dive in!

Step 1: Get Your Tools Ready

Before we start, you’ll need:

A ChatGPT API key – This is how your AI agent will think and respond. You can grab one from OpenAI.

A Make.com account – This is the magical glue that connects everything together. Sign up at Make.com.

A basic understanding of how not to break things – (Optional but highly recommended).

Step 2: Set Up Your Make.com Scenario

Think of Make.com as your AI agent’s personal assistant. It will take in messages, send them to ChatGPT, and then return the responses. Here’s how to do it:

1.Log into Make.com and click “Create a new scenario.”

2.Click the big, friendly ‘+’ button and select Webhooks (this will act as the AI’s ears, listening for incoming messages).

3.Click “Custom Webhook” and hit “Add” → Name it something fancy like “AI Mastermind 3000” (or just “ChatGPT Agent”).

4.Click “Save” and then “Copy URL”—this is your webhook’s address.

Step 3: Connect ChatGPT to Your Webhook

Now that your webhook is ready to listen, let’s make it talk to ChatGPT.

5. Add a new module, select “OpenAI”, and choose “Create a completion” (this is how your AI generates text).

6.Paste your OpenAI API Key in the settings.

7.In the Prompt field, type something like:

“You are a helpful AI assistant. Answer user questions concisely.”

8.Connect the Webhook Data from Step 2 to the ChatGPT prompt input.

Your AI can now think, but it still can’t talk back. Let’s fix that.

9.Add another module → Select “Webhooks” again → Choose “Make a Response”.

10. Connect it to the OpenAI module so whatever ChatGPT generates gets sent back to the user.

Your AI agent now takes messages, thinks, and responds!

Step 5: Test Your AI Agent (And Hope It Doesn’t Become Sentient)

11.Click “Run Once” in Make.com.

12.Send a test message to your webhook (use a tool like Postman or a simple form submission).

13. If everything works, you should see a beautiful AI-generated response pop up.

If something breaks, don’t panic—just retrace your steps. If all else fails, remember William Peers Digital AI & Automation Services exists for a reason.

Bonus: Add More Cool Features

Want to level up your AI agent? Here are a few extra things you can do:

Connect to WhatsApp or Slack – Let your AI chat with your team!

Log conversations to Google Sheets – Keep track of what your AI is saying (hopefully nothing embarrassing).

Automate email replies – Because nobody enjoys inbox overload.

Final Thoughts: Congratulations, You Built an AI Agent! 🎊

You’re now officially an AI creator! Your new ChatGPT-powered agent can automate responses, assist with tasks, and (hopefully) not take over the world.

If you want a more advanced setup, William Peers Digital AI & Automation Services can help fine-tune things, integrate with other platforms, and ensure your AI isn’t giving out totally unhinged responses.
